Speeding through furniture store parking lot: verdict legally binding
After the speeding death of a 21-year-old woman in a furniture store parking lot near Augsburg, the verdict against the driver of a high-powered SUV is final. Neither the convicted man nor the public prosecutor's office had lodged an appeal within the deadline, as the Augsburg Regional Court announced on Friday in response to a dpa inquiry.
The 55-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison last week for an illegal motor vehicle race resulting in death. In August 2022, he had accelerated his car to well over 100 kilometers per hour in a built-up area. He lost control of the car on a bend and the car, which weighed more than two and a half tons, literally flew across the adjacent parking lot and crashed into a shopping cart rack.
Two female customers of the furniture store had to run away from the hurling vehicle. The female passenger in the driver's car died and the two passengers in the back seat were injured. Emergency services who were called to the scene of the accident spoke of a "battlefield" or "debris field".
The conviction of the speeding driver is a significant legal process in criminal law. Furthermore, traffic violations, like this one, can lead to severe traffic judgments, as demonstrated by the five-year sentence imposed.
