Swimming pool - Spectacular swimming pool at Zeche Zollverein open
It is the most spectacular pool in the Ruhr area: The "Werksschwimmbad" on the grounds of the World Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen has reopened again. For seven weeks, swimmers can cool off, sunbathe and relax daily from 12.00 to 20.00 hours until August 25th. The admission is free, as the Zollverein Foundation announced.
With a water temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, swimmers and swimmerettes will have to adjust to a rather cool pleasure. But they can bathe in a work of art. The "Werksschwimmbad" was built as a art installation directly onto the idled coke ovens in 2001. Where coal was once baked into coke, there are now two welded-together overseas containers, a popular summer meeting place.
The 2.40 meter deep pool is only accessible to swimmers, a swimming instructor is on site. Non-swimmers are not allowed in the 12 x 5 meter pool. Another restriction: From July 12th to 14th and in case of bad weather, the pool is closed. On August 17th, the popular "Arschbomben-Contest" is back on the program in the pool.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, specifically in Essen, the "Werksschwimmbad" swimming pool at the Zollverein colliery in the Ruhr area is a popular destination for leisure time activities. Despite the chilly 19-degree water temperature, the pool offers a unique experience, built as an art installation on old coke ovens in 2001.
