Spectacular debut for Scherning
Daniel Scherning was delighted with his spectacular debut as coach of Eintracht Braunschweig. With a winning goal in the ninth minute of stoppage time, the team at the bottom of the 2nd Bundesliga table won 3:2 (1:1) against new bottom club VfL Osnabrück on Saturday. The 40-year-old Scherning had coached Osnabrück himself until August 2022.
"It felt like the stadium exploded after the 3-2 win," said Braunschweig's third coach of the season. "But it has to be said quite clearly that this was not a coaching victory. It was a victory for the whole squad. As a coach, you can change a few things in four or five days. But you can't make sure you win a game. The boys did that on the pitch. From the very first moment, I noticed a lively squad that isn't happy with how the season has gone so far."
After a yellow card for Michael Cuisance (60th minute), Eintracht played more than half an hour in superior numbers and still needed the last action of the entire game to secure this deserved victory. The much more dangerous hosts had twice taken the lead through goals from Johan Gomez (11') and Anton Donkor (61'). However, the completely harmless VfL made the most of their only two chances to score in the match with penalties from Cuisance (45.+1/foul penalty) and Erik Engelhardt (87./manual penalty). The winning goal was then scored by crowd favorite Ermin Bicakcic in only his third appearance since returning from Hoffenheim.
"We showed the spirit and the necessary power. It was a victory fought for by the team today and not by Ermin Bicakcic," said the 33-year-old defender, who praised the new coach Scherning: "There was little time for the coach. But he made clear announcements and gave clear instructions."
Despite his former coaching stint with VfL Osnabrück, Daniel Scherning celebrated a triumphant return to the Bundesliga 2 as Eintracht Braunschweig's new coach. His first win as the Herrscher of the Blue-Whites came against his previous team, securing a 3:2 victory despite being reduced to ten men due to Michael Cuisance's yellow card.
