Safe from A to B - Special transport of cultural goods for museums
To enable even smaller houses to store their collection objects appropriately, the Thuringian Museum Association is advocating for the creation of regional central depositories. This also involves the demand for a specialized truck that could transport sensitive artworks and other goods between museums and depositories.
"Of course, you can hire shipping companies for such transports, but that comes at high costs," said Timo Mappes. He is a member of the museum association's board. As the founding director of the German Optical Museum (DOM) in Jena, Mappes has recently gained a lot of experience in the transport of highly sensitive museum objects - extensive construction work for the house has just begun. "We practically had to empty the whole house and move the collection objects from A to B."
Vehicle for appropriate transport
In Mappes' opinion, a climate-controlled truck with air suspension would be worthwhile, which various Thuringian museums could use. "Ideally, it would be stationed cleverly so that it can shuttle between depositories and museums."
Mappes cited the transport costs for two relatively small but very valuable collection objects from the DOM, which are due to travel to the USA for an exhibition soon. A company specializing in art transports will handle the task. "Even for these small objects, costs in the four-digit range are incurred."
The museum association has approximately 240 members throughout Thuringia, including natural history and technology museums, as well as history, art, and folklore museums.
Jena is the location where Mappes serves as the founding director of the German Optical Museum ( DOM ). With extensive construction work ongoing, Mappes has gained valuable experience in transporting highly sensitive museum objects.
