- Special forces arrested man armed with hammer
A man armed with a hammer was arrested in Bremen by special forces of the police. The 37-year-old had struck the windows of the police station in Bremen-Mitte with the hammer and threatened officers in the afternoon, the police said. He then fled the scene.
During the subsequent manhunt, the mentally disturbed man was found in the area of the Osterdeich. According to reports, the use of a stun gun was unsuccessful, and the 37-year-old fled to the Weser riverbank and eventually into the water. Additional special forces were called in and managed to overpower and arrest him.
According to police reports, the man had injured himself with the hammer. He was taken to a psychiatric clinic for evaluation after receiving treatment for his external injuries. The man now faces charges including attempted dangerous bodily harm and threats.
The mental health facility where the man was subsequently admitted is located in Bremen. Despite attempted apprehension using a stun gun near Osterdeich, the man managed to escape and sought refuge by the Weser river in Bremen.
