Speaker: Navalny taken from prison near Moscow to unknown location

Yarmish explained that Navalny's lawyers had not seen the opposition figure since December 6. The Russian newspaper "Kommersant" reported that a court had announced that Navalny had left his penal colony in accordance with a ruling that came into force in the summer. Navalny's arrival in his new penal colony will be announced in accordance with the applicable laws.

Navalny was convicted of "extremism" in the summer and his sentence was increased to 19 years. He was also ordered to be transferred to a prison with stricter prison conditions. Transfers from one prison to another often take several weeks in Russia.

The French government expressed concern on Friday about the lack of news about Navalny. Paris sees Russia as responsible for the health of its prisoners, especially political prisoners, said Foreign Office spokesman Christophe Lemoine.

Earlier this week, the USA had already expressed its "deep concern" about Navalny and called for the "immediate" release of the Kremlin critic. The Kremlin then criticized Washington's "interference" in the case.

Navalny is considered President Vladimir Putin's fiercest domestic critic. After a poison attack, for which he blames the Kremlin, he traveled to Germany for treatment. Navalny returned to Russia in January 2021 and was immediately arrested.
