"Employees with a normal full-time job pay around 20 percent income tax in Germany, while heirs to huge companies pay an average of 2.8 percent inheritance tax," said Kühnert. This is "an obvious injustice to the majority of people who do not inherit anything relevant and therefore have poorer opportunities for the future". The SPD wants to change this: "With us, performance should be rewarded and not the gene pool."

At the party conference, the SPD General Secretary expects the delegates to criticize the party leadership. "I would be surprised if we get three days of standing applause," said Kühnert. He often hears calls from the party that the SPD should sell itself and its successes better.

"Our members know very well what we have achieved so far in the coalition, but they also see our poll ratings and want to see us fight," he said. "So the party conference will not just be about greetings and an after-work beer."
