SPD wants education offensive for consumer protection in schools
The SPD wants to strengthen consumer protection in Schleswig-Holstein through an education offensive. "The fact that the Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for consumer protection should not mean that consumer protection only revolves around agriculture," SPD consumer protection politician Marc Timmer told the German Press Agency.
The opposition politician criticized the CDU-led ministry, saying that he understood the approach of raising pupils' understanding of conventional agriculture. However, the corresponding budget item of 350,000 euros was too high, said Timmer.
"In addition to these fields, there are other areas for schoolchildren that should not be overlooked and are also worthy of support." The Social Democrats had already submitted a motion to the state parliament with concrete proposals.
Education politician Martin Habersaat said that the magic word to make school and lessons interesting for pupils is "relevance to the world". "In almost every meeting with state politicians, they want more practical financial education, for example, from overdraft facilities to tax returns. The topic of fashion lends itself to questioning globalization and working conditions worldwide."
The path of the short message service Twitter to X is just as exciting as the question of what China is doing with children's data via the TikTok platform, said Habersaat. "We could put aside the timetable once a week and devote ourselves exclusively to these and similar questions."
The SPD aims to incorporate consumer protection into the curriculum of schools across Schleswig-Holstein, advocating for a comprehensive education offensive in Parliament. Furthermore, the SPD, including SPD politician Marc Timmer, has proposed expanding this education to cover various consumer-related topics beyond agriculture.
