SPD terminates red-green coalition in Hanover's town hall

The SPD has ended its alliance with the Greens on Hanover City Council. The reason for this was not just the mobility concept, said Daniel Cord, Managing Director of the Hannover Region SPD sub-district, on Monday. Rather, cooperation within the coalition had not worked out. Hanover's Lord Mayor Belit Onay (Greens) had also sparked criticism with his plan to create a virtually car-free city center by 2030.

The hand in the direction of the Greens remains outstretched, said Cord. The SPD did not want to enter into a new coalition, but instead wanted to rely on the concept of changing majorities in the council.

The termination of the coalition is not good news for Hanover - especially not in such turbulent times, reacted Mayor Onay via the short message service X. The head of the town hall will have to look for his majorities in the council in future. The SPD could theoretically also block projects together with the CDU and FDP. Onay was elected as the new Lord Mayor of Hanover at the end of 2019, ending decades of SPD rule.

Despite the SPD's decision to terminate the coalition with the Greens, they maintain an open hand towards potential future partnerships. The SPD, along with potential allies like the CDU and FDP, could potentially block certain projects in Hanover's council.

Following the SPD's termination of the red-green coalition, various municipal parties will likely engage in negotiations to form new majorities in Hanover's town hall.
