Nationality law - SPD senators welcome easier naturalization procedures

Berlin's Senator for Integration, Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD), views the new Citizenship Law that took effect from Thursday positively. "This reform creates incentives for integration and dismantles barriers. I am delighted twice: as a Senator for Integration and as a child of a Turkish immigrant worker family," Kiziltepe stated on Wednesday.

This reform finally allows for multiple citizenships for all immigrants. "The contributions of the former guest worker generation are recognized, and their naturalization is facilitated." Moreover, people who have newly arrived in Germany could already acquire German citizenship after five years.

Senator Spranger sees Berlin well-prepared

Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) expects a significantly increasing number of naturalizations: "Through the acceptance of multiple citizenships and the shortening of waiting periods, more people will be able to acquire German citizenship." Berlin is well-prepared for this with the centralization of naturalization at the Berlin Immigration Office and the digital application procedure, enabling 20,000 naturalizations per year.
