SPD MP Kathrin Anklam-Trapp has been elected as the new Vice-President of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament. The 55-year-old succeeds Astrid Schmitt, who recently announced that she would be leaving parliament at the end of the year after more than 27 years. The 64-year-old native of Hamburg is resigning her seat for personal reasons.

Anklam-Trapp was elected unanimously in parliament in Mainz on Wednesday. There were no opposing candidates. She said it was a great honor for her to take on the office of state parliament vice president. "Thank you for your trust," she said after the vote. Anklam-Trapp, who is already deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group, care policy spokesperson for the parliamentary group and spokesperson for people with disabilities, will take up the post at the beginning of next year.

State Parliament President Hendrik Hering (SPD) thanked Astrid Schmitt for her many years of close cooperation. She had exercised the office of Vice President with composure and self-confidence, occasionally with humor and always with elegance and style.
