SPD leader Klingbeil: Budget must be finished next week

The open feud within the traffic light government has once again created uncertainty, which is reflected in dissatisfaction with the government, according to Klingbeil. "My firm belief in how politics should be conducted is not about working against each other, but with each other."

For the budget of 2025, there is still a billion-dollar gap that the traffic light government aims to at least reduce. The Ministry of Finance, led by FDP Chairman Christian Lindner, released results of studies on how this could be achieved in early July, ruling out certain options. The SPD and Greens accused the finance minister of going public without consulting the coalition.

The federal government plans to submit the draft budget to the Bundestag on August 16. If there are changes to the proposal, a cabinet decision would still be necessary, which can also be made by circulation. The Bundestag aims to begin deliberations in September, with a passage planned by the end of November.

The 'budgetary dispute' between the SPD and Greens and the Ministry of Finance, headed by Christian Lindner, stemmed from the finance minister revealing potential solutions for the billion-dollar gap in the 2025 budget without consulting the coalition partners. This 'budgetary dispute' is causing tension within the German 'traffic light government'.
