National party conference - SPD leader in favor of constitutional change in Thuringia
SPD leader and Interior Minister Georg Maier is calling for a constitutional amendment to clearly regulate the election of the Minister President in Thuringia in future. The passage stating that the third round of voting determines who has the most yes votes creates a lot of uncertainty, Maier said at a state party conference in Meiningen on Saturday. Thuringia should base any changes on regulations in other federal states such as Saxony.
In his opinion, this also applies to a limit on the duration of government formation as well as a passage according to which the state parliament is deemed dissolved if no prime minister is elected within a certain number of months. A new state parliament will be elected in Thuringia next year. According to representative polls, there are signs of a difficult majority situation once again. There has been a red-red-green minority government in Thuringia since 2020, which is dependent on compromises with the opposition for all laws and motions in the state parliament and runs the risk of being outvoted by the CDU, AfD and FDP.
