SPD in favor of criminal prosecution for anti-Israel slogans

The SPD parliamentary group believes that the slogan "From the river to the sea", which is often used at pro-Palestinian demonstrations, should also be prosecuted in the south-west in future. This is stated in a position paper on anti-Semitism adopted on Tuesday and made available to the German Press Agency. The Baden-Württemberg law enforcement authorities should follow the example of Bavaria and Saarland and prosecute the slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free".

The phrase dates back to the 1960s, when it was used by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It is intended to express that the aim is the complete liberation of Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea - which would also include the territory of Israel.

"The slogan is indisputably used as a cipher for the annihilation of Israel and thus inevitably stands for the propagated destruction of Jewish life on its territory," said Boris Weirauch, the SPD parliamentary group's legal policy spokesman.

The SPD's call for prosecution of the slogan extends to future demonstrations, aiming to maintain internal security and prevent the promotion of extremist views. This stance is a response to the historical use of the slogan "From the river to the sea" by the Palestine Liberation Organization, which has been interpreted as a call for the destruction of Israel.
