The current Onno Eckert managed to secure first place in the Gotha district council election, but will now have to face a runoff. As per statistics from the state election commissioner on Monday, Eckert earned 43.7% of the votes during Sunday's initial voting round. His competitor in the forthcoming runoff within the next two weeks is the AfD candidate, Stephan Steinbrück, who obtained 31.2%. Eckert has held the position of district councilor in Gotha since 2018.
