Country comparison - SPD and Greens examine another public holiday for Lower Saxony
The SPD and the Greens are holding talks about the possible introduction of another public holiday in Lower Saxony. With ten public holidays to date, Lower Saxony is one of the worst in Germany, Green Party parliamentary group leader Detlev Schulz-Hendel told the German Press Agency. The Greens wanted to change this. "Our aim is to come to a conclusion before the end of this legislative period and introduce another public holiday," said Schulz-Hendel. "We consider International Women's Day on March 8, the Day of German Liberation from Nazi rule on May 8 or Europe Day on May 9 to be suitable."
SPD parliamentary group leader Grant Hendrik Tonne confirmed that the party is in discussions with its coalition partner on this issue. "We want to hold talks with social players and examine whether we should introduce another secular public holiday," said Tonne. This is also stipulated in the red-green coalition agreement.
However, the opposition and the business community have criticized the plans. "In order to preserve our prosperity and finance the enormous government spending, we actually need more working hours in these times," said Volker Schmidt, Managing Director of the employers' association Niedersachsenmetall. The employers' associations (UVN) pointed out that more than one billion euros are generated every working day in Lower Saxony. What is not made up on other days is lost in economic output with another public holiday.
