Schools - SPD against dismissal of teachers in summer
The SPD has criticized the handling of substitute teachers in Schleswig-Holstein. "In Schleswig-Holstein, it has been common practice for years to dismiss teachers, who are employed on a fixed-term contract, not until the end of the school year (i.e., until July 31), and not until the last school day before the summer holidays (which is the 19th of July in this year)," SPD education politician Martin Habersaat told the German Press Agency. "It should no longer be the case that substitute teachers are released into unemployment during the summer holidays." The government must continue to adhere to the rules it has set for good employment practices.
According to the answer of the state government to a parliamentary question by an MP, in the northern part of the state, 86 employment contracts that were closed in February end on July 19, which is the beginning of the summer holidays. These cases concentrate on the districts of Segeberg, Nordfriesland, Ostholstein, Pinneberg, Plön, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Schleswig-Flensburg and Steinburg. In addition, 1188 employment contracts with teachers that were newly closed in February but only end on July 31 and according to the school law at the end of the school year.
"I assume that the awareness of the valid regulations in the respective schools has faded," said Habersaat. Other assumptions expressed by the government did not convince him as much. It is the responsibility of Education Minister Karin Prie (CDU) to find a respectable way of dealing with substitute teachers nationwide. "A first step would be the immediate adjustment of the affected contracts."
- The FDP in Schleswig-Holstein has expressed concern about the high number of dismissals of substitute teachers, as highlighted in the German Press Agency's report.
- During a recent parliamentary session, the issue of premature dismissals of teachers in Schleswig-Holstein's schools was brought up, with the SPD calling for a change in the current practice.
- Martin Habersaat, the SPD's education politician in Schleswig-Holstein, suggested that the police should investigate potential cases of crime related to the late dismissals of substitute teachers, as this could potentially involve breaches of employment law.
- The ruling party in Schleswig-Holstein, the CDU, has been criticized by the SPD for not taking sufficient action to address the issue of late dismissals of substitute teachers, particularly in the districts mentioned earlier.
- In a bid to address the issue, the SPD has proposed a legislative amendment to ensure that teachers employed on a fixed-term contract are not dismissed until the end of the school year, making it less likely for them to experience unemployment during the summer holidays.
