The importance of spas and recreational areas as economic drivers can't be overstated, especially in regions that are structurally weak. A report from tourism associations reveals that over 20% of all recorded overnight stays in these areas were booked last year. When just rural areas (excluding Dresden, Leipzig, and Chemnitz) are considered, this number jumps up to 40%. In Saxony alone, there are 14 spas and 27 recreational zones, the associations inform us.

Similar financial support schemes have already been put in place in other states, points out Jörg Markert, head of the state tourism association. "In Thuringia, for example, the spa towns have been receiving aid of more than ten million euros annually for quite some time."
