Upcoming National Elections in 2025 - Southern's future role as chancellor isn't part of my personal career blueprint.
Bavarian CSU head Markus Söder has no intention of contesting for the post of Federal Chancellor, as he put it himself during a chat on ARD's "Report from Berlin" summer special. He made it clear, "It wasn't like that back in '21, and it isn't now." If the CDU were to press him, he'd find himself in a tricky predicament, needing to make a call. Generally, the larger Union sibling party, the CDU, steers the ship.
However, a consensus between CDU chief Friedrich Merz is a guarantee. They'll make this decision jointly. "Our sole aim is to topple the traffic light coalition," Söder reiterated. "We won't screw it up." Both leaders have promised a decision before autumn rolls around this year.
The CDU, being the larger Union sibling party, typically takes the lead, as indicated by their role in steering the ship. Despite this, the Commission, likely referring to a decision-making body within the parties, has agreed that the decision to challenge for the post of Federal Chancellor will be made jointly by the CDU chief, Friedrich Merz, and Bavarian CSU head Markus Söder.
