Traffic - Southern section of the Salzbachtal bridge is opened
The southern section of the Salzbachtal bridge on the Autobahn 66 in Wiesbaden will be opened on Monday (2.30 p.m.). A spokesperson for Autobahn GmbH said that traffic should be able to cross the new bridge in the late afternoon. Traffic in both directions will then flow across two narrowed lanes. The "considerable traffic restrictions" in the entire region will then be a thing of the past.
Before the opening on Monday, there will be an official opening of the highway bridge with speeches by Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) and Hessian Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens). The program includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Salzbachtal Bridge was blown up on November 6, 2021. Prior to this, the dilapidated structure had to be closed for safety reasons. In June 2021, the bearing of a pillar in the southern section of the Salzbachtal Bridge collapsed. The superstructure collapsed and pieces of concrete fell onto the federal highway 263 below, causing major traffic restrictions.
The total costs are around 225 million euros - 146.4 million euros had been estimated in 2018. The highway company cited the general rise in construction prices as the reason for the cost increase. According to Autobahn GmbH, the northern section should be completed by mid-2025.

The opening of the southern section of the Salzbachtal bridge on Autobahn 66 in Wiesbaden, managed by the Autobahn Gmbh of the federal government, is anticipated to significantly reduce traffic congestions in Hesse. Post-opening, commuters will be able to cross the new bridge, albeit on two narrowed lanes, marking an end to the extensive traffic restrictions in the region.
Following the construction of the Salzbachtal Bridge's northern section, by mid-2025, commuters will enjoy smoother journeys along Autobahn 66 in Wiesbaden, as the once problematic stretch of road is transformed into a modern, efficient highway.
