Bundesliga - "Something is possible": Mainz coach Siewert sees opportunity at BVB
In the last game of the year, second-to-last FSV Mainz 05 would like to send out an encouraging signal in the relegation battle in the Bundesliga at Borussia Dortmund. "We showed last season that something is possible in Dortmund. The players have that in their backpacks," said interim coach Jan Siewert ahead of the match on Tuesday (8.30pm/Sat.1 and Sky).
With a 2:2 draw in the last game of the 2022/23 season, the club from the Rheinhessen region had prevented the Westphalians from winning the league title in May of this year. Siewert is now hoping for a similar performance again. "We need passion and courage," emphasized the coach on Monday.
For the 41-year-old, the outcome of the game at BVB could also be a deciding factor in his promotion to head coach and thus permanent successor to Bo Svensson. However, the current situation with just nine points and only twelve goals scored so far - only 1. FC Köln (10) have scored even fewer - leaves little room for optimism.
Especially as they have not scored for 321 minutes and recently lost 1:1 at home to 1. FC Heidenheim. "We were frustrated after the game, but we are eager to attack again," asserted Siewert. With one-on-one talks, praise and constructive criticism, he tried "with my touch" to rebuild his professionals and prepare them for BVB.
He wants to slow down Borussia, who are known for their offensive strength, with counter-pressing, a compact team and resilience. The coach is convinced that his team will show the "right face". However, only Anthony Caci could possibly return from the numerous injuries.
