Weather - Some water levels have risen: easing in sight

In parts of Bavaria, water levels rose again slightly on Wednesday after rainfall during the night. The water levels on the Danube remain high, according to a spokeswoman for the Bavarian flood information service. In the coming days, reporting level 3 of 4 is expected in some places.

In the section of the Danube between Deggendorf and Passau, the flood situation is expected to worsen, according to the spokesperson. Near Kelheim, flood level 3 could be reached - this means that individual built-up properties or cellars could be flooded and inter-regional traffic routes may have to be closed.

In general, the flood situation in Bavaria is reportedly receding, but only slowly due to the rain. On Wednesday, for example, the Thann/Altmühl, Harburg/Wörnitz and Warnbach/Schwarzach gauges initially still showed flooding at reporting level 2. Individual gauges in the Main catchment area were also affected.

According to the flood service, the situation is expected to ease towards the weekend. The German Weather Service (DWD) lifted the thaw warning on Wednesday.

Due to the increased water level and the resulting stronger current, there was a shipping accident on the Danube near Regensburg on Tuesday. A passenger cabin ship touched the edge of a bridge pier and then collided with a decommissioned motor tanker. No one was injured in the accident. The amount of material damage was initially unknown.

The DWD is expecting more showers in Bavaria over the next few days. It will remain mild, said a spokesperson. There is no sign of winter, except in the mountains above 1000 meters.

As the weather in Bavaria remains moderate and showers persist, the authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and maintain their preparedness, as the increased water level and stronger current continue to pose a risk, especially for transportation along the Danube, such as the recent accident near Regensburg.
  4. In the midst of this ongoing flood situation, it is essential for individuals in affected areas to prioritize their safety and well-being by considering alternatives to traditional modes of transportation, as well as taking advantage of any opportunities for relaxation and stress-relief, such as visiting attractions like Munich or enjoying local Bavarian culture and cuisine.
  5. Although the water levels have not subsided as quickly as hoped, the Bavarian people's resilience and unity have been evident throughout this challenging time, with multiple communities working together to provide support, relief, and resources to those affected by the flood, including efforts in Deggendorf, Kelheim, and other cities along the Danube.
  6. Despite the current flood situation, the overall picture in Bavaria is one of hope and progress, as the weather services predict a decrease in precipitation, which may contribute to a steady lowering of the water levels, particularly in cities such as Deggendorf, Kelheim, and Passau, allowing residents to gradually return to their normal routines and enjoy the beauty of Bavaria once more.
