Wage gap - Some male professors earn significantly more than female professors

Professors at universities in Baden-Württemberg generally earn more than female professors - up to approximately 900 Euro per month in some cases. This is the result of a study conducted by the Science Ministry in Stuttgart. Previously, "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" had reported on this. Science Minister Petra Olschowski told the newspapers: "On average, female professors are paid up to 5.7 percent less than their male colleagues, depending on the type of university."

The so-called Gender Pay Gap, according to the study, ranges from 52 to 523 Euro per month. The largest difference is reportedly in the field of engineering sciences at universities. According to the survey, men received an average of roughly 900 Euro more per month. The difference is also significant in the field of medicine at universities, the ministry added.

Minister Olschowski stated: "A 'That's just the way it is' response is no longer sufficient. We expect the universities to investigate the causes, take countermeasures, and gradually become fairer." In general, the Ministry noted that the wage differences are smallest at Dual Universities of Applied Sciences and largest at universities. Data from all 45 state-run universities were examined. A new edition of the study is expected in five years.

  1. The wage gap in Baden-Württemberg's universities, as highlighted in the study conducted in Stuttgart, is particularly evident in the fields of engineering sciences and medicine, with female professors earning significantly less than their male counterparts.
  2. The Southwest region of Germany, specifically Baden-Württemberg, has been under scrutiny due to the persistent wage gap between female and male professors in its universities, with reports being published in both "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and "Stuttgarter Nachrichten".
  3. Society in Germany, particularly in the state of Baden-Württemberg, has been urged to address the wage gap issue in universities by Science Minister Petra Olschowski, who expects universities to investigate the causes, implement changes, and strive for fairness in wages.
  4. The wage gap in the work environment at universities in Baden-Württemberg, which was brought to light through the ministry's study, sparked criticism and calls for action in Stuttgart, leading to the expectation that universities will take steps to address the issue within the next five years.
