Solar system installed on the Topography of Terror
In future, the Topography of Terror Memorial Center will obtain 40 percent of its electricity requirements from a solar system on its own roof. Berliner Stadtwerke has installed a photovoltaic system on the documentation center, which will produce almost 180,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. This corresponds to the electricity consumption of around 40 four-person households. According to the municipal utilities, the system consists of 534 solar modules.
"We are delighted that we are taking the energy transition a step further at this special historic location in the heart of Berlin," says Stadtwerke Managing Director Kerstin Busch. "And we look forward to other cultural institutions following the example of the Topography of Terror."
The city is pursuing the goal of achieving an average share of 25 percent solar power in Berlin's annual electricity generation by 2035. An expansion target of 4,400 megawatts of installed photovoltaic capacity (megawatt peak) has been set for this goal. According to the city's photovoltaic dashboard, around 21,000 photovoltaic systems with an average output of 231 megawatts have been installed to date. The system at the Topography of Terror memorial site has a total installed capacity of 0.2 megawatts.
The Topography of Terror Memorial Center could potentially utilize solar energy from nearby monuments, contributing to a more sustainable energy mix. With the integration of solar panels on notable landmarks, the city could showcase its commitment to environmental preservation and historical preservation simultaneously.
