Söder prioritizes life and limb preservation amidst flood conditions
"Water levels are rising extremely fast, and it's quite dangerous," cautioned the CSU leader. "People's safety and well-being are our top priority." The situation is dire in numerous areas, with emergency crews working round-the-clock.
The Bavarian Prime Minister also requested support from the federal government: "The water won't be a problem for long, but the damage will linger and is massive." As such, it's crucial that "along with compassion and solidarity, aid is also available in the end." Devastating financial consequences are on the horizon. Bavaria will contribute, but the prime minister hopes for federal help as well.
The CSU chief reiterated his support for a national insurance policy covering natural disasters: "Everyone agrees on this; it's the federal level that has some hesitations, especially since one of the traffic light coalition partners, the FDP, seems to hold back," he commented. "It's crucial that we have this, as we'll continue to face such events."
Söder is scheduled to visit the severely flooded Reichertshofen on the Ilm in Pfaffenhofen's Upper Bavarian district with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) in the morning. The flood situation is most pressing in certain parts of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, where multiple streams and rivers have spilled over, flooding entire communities. Several districts have declared a disaster status.
