Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) anticipates that the flood disaster will continue to consume the attention of disaster control teams in the state for several more days. "Things are improving a bit, but we can't issue an all-clear just yet," he disclosed over a Germany radio program known as Deutschlandfunk on Monday morning. Although the rain may stop, the water levels from large rivers will persist to rise due to the heavy inflows, he underscored. It is projected that relief operations may last till Wednesday or Thursday. The immediate priority is to support the exhausted emergency crews. Forces will be collected from different parts of Bavaria as well as other federal states.
As a next step, the state and the federal government will need to collaborate to fix the massive damage inflicted in the affected regions. Söder appealed for a compulsory homeowners' insurance for property owners on two separate radio stations: Deutschlandfunk and BR's Bayern 2. "I'm insistent on us having this natural disaster insurance," he stated. He argued that not everyone would want to insure themselves, while others may be denied coverage due to high risks. This form of compulsory insurance should be decided at the next Minister Presidents' Conference at the earliest. While voluntary insurance is usually better, Söder thinks it's crucial in this scenario to mandate insurance. "We can't always cover these damages with state funds." This is another kind of basic protection required.
