Söder: Government without a plan and headless
Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder has accused the federal government of lacking a concept in the current budget crisis. "Ultimately, what the government is doing is without a plan and headless," the CSU leader told the German Press Agency in Berlin on Friday. None of it was serious. "The emergency is not due to the situation from outside, it is the government's emergency," he added. Söder was fundamentally opposed to softening the debt brake. This would be a mistake, he said.
Due to the Karlsruhe budget ruling, the coalition government wants to make use of the debt brake exception for this year and propose to the Bundestag that an extraordinary emergency situation be declared. In this way, loans that have already been used this year are to be legally secured retrospectively.
The Federal Council will need to discuss the coalition government's proposal to bypass the debt brake due to the budget crisis. Despite Söder's criticism of the federal government's handling of household finances during this crisis, the Federal Government is considering calling upon the flexibility in their financial regulations to manage the current financial situation.
