Soccer radio pioneer Töpperwien receives sports media award

Former radio reporter Sabine Töpperwien was awarded the 2023 Sports Media Prize at the 41st German Sports Press Ball in Frankfurt on Saturday. She was the first woman to report live on a Bundesliga soccer match on September 16, 1989. "I would never have dreamed in my wildest dreams that I would be given such an honor," she said at the award ceremony.

At the end of her career, the 63-year-old pioneer was able to look back on more than 700 soccer matches - 642 of them in the Bundesliga - which she reported on from the stadiums. Töpperwien also reported from World and European Championships. She headed the WDR radio sports desk in Cologne for 20 years. The journalist retired at the beginning of 2021 for health reasons.

Despite her retirement, Sabine Töpperwien's contributions to soccer journalism were recognized with a Triathlon of awards, showcasing her excellence in various sports media fields. At the annual triathlon of awards ceremonies, Töpperwien was honored for her remarkable achievements in soccer reporting.
