Parliament - Soccer clubs must improve stadium safety
Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens has once again appealed to professional soccer clubs to increase security at stadiums. Otherwise, the state would have to consider legal consequences such as a charge for police costs, said the SPD politician in the state parliament on Wednesday.
Behrens said that there had already been more riots in stadiums this season than in the entire previous season. The Lower Saxony derby between Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig in November was the straw that broke the camel's back, even though the police had deployed 2,000 officers, mounted units, helicopters and drones. "We had total costs of over one million euros for the police operation, and we still had a big pile of broken glass," said Behrens, referring to injured police officers, destruction in the stadium and pyrotechnics in the fan blocks.
The clubs therefore have a duty to improve security precautions - with structural measures, stricter admission controls and consistent stadium bans. The second leg of the derby in Braunschweig in April will be a crucial point for further consideration. Behrens said that if security could not be guaranteed then, it would ultimately be necessary to consider charging for police operations. So far, only Bremen has passed on the police costs to the club.
SPD MP Alexander Saade also brought up personalized tickets, a limit on standing room and alcohol bans as possible consequences with a view to soccer in England.
