Snowfall up to altitudes of 200 meters
According to the German Weather Service, the snowfall on Monday and Tuesday mainly affected central Germany. According to meteorologist Markus Übel, the band stretched "like a ribbon" from North Rhine-Westphalia across Hesse, Saxony, southern Brandenburg and parts of Franconia. Only a few snowflakes fell to the north. In the south, the precipitation mainly fell as rain.
According to the DWD, the focus of the snowfall within this strip was on the congested areas of the Taunus and Westerwald. According to Übel, it was "remarkable" that widespread snow also fell in places that are only 200 to 400 meters above sea level. In Bad Homburg (Hochtaunus district), for example, 16 centimetres of fresh snow fell, in Wiesbaden-Aurigen 17 centimetres and in Hofheim (Main-Taunus district) 10 centimetres. Of course, more snow fell at higher altitudes, for example 36 centimetres on the small Feldberg mountain.
"It's going to be wintry for the next few days," said Übel. On Wednesday, we can expect rather foul weather, with permafrost from Thursday. There won't be so much fresh snow across the whole area, but rather small-scale showers, the location of which is difficult to predict.
The weather forecast suggests a wintry spell, with permafrost starting from Thursday. Despite being only 200 to 400 meters above sea level, widespread snowfall was reported in certain areas during the recent snowfall.
