Weather - Snow then warm again - further problems with the railroads

Before the snowfall in the country takes a break for the time being, road users in particular will have to prepare for icy conditions in some places on Wednesday. The German Weather Service in Stuttgart is expecting sleet or snow, especially at medium and higher altitudes, i.e. above around 400 meters. By the evening, 10 to 15 centimetres of fresh snow could fall in the higher mountain regions. Above 800 meters, there should also be snow drifts due to strong winds and squalls. In the rest of the country, rain was forecast again and again on Wednesday.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the snowfall since the weekend continued to cause severe disruption to train services in the southwest. Many ICE connections, for example between Stuttgart and Munich, were also canceled on Wednesday. The company expected disruptions to continue throughout the south-east of the country until at least Thursday.

Only a few trains were running on regional services between Ulm, Friedrichshafen and Lindau (Bavaria) because only diesel trains were able to run on the line due to damage to the overhead lines. According to the railroad company, however, there are only a few diesel-powered vehicles in the region.

Passengers on the Black Forest Railway between Karlsruhe and Constance once again had to change to buses. Replacement buses were also in use from Singen (Hohentwiel) to Constance on Wednesday.

The German Weather Service generally expected the snowfall to subside. On Thursday, after fog, it will be widely clear and the sun is expected to shine through the clouds from time to time. On the Danube, it may remain cloudy all day due to the fog. Minus degrees on the Danube, up to four degrees in the Rhine valley. Towards the weekend, it should become significantly warmer, around three degrees in Upper Swabia and up to eleven degrees on the Rhine.
