Winterport - Snow and Christmas markets attract visitors to the Harz Mountains
On the first Advent, many visitors were drawn to the Christmas markets and toboggan runs in the Harz Mountains. The Christmas markets were well attended and traffic levels were correspondingly high, said a spokesperson for the Harz police department on Sunday. After it snowed again on Sunday night, the toboggan slopes in Schierke in the Upper Harz were officially open for the first Advent.
The webcams at the parking garage in Schierke also showed many winter sports enthusiasts sledding down the slopes or cross-country skiing on the trails. However, the ski lifts were still closed in Saxony-Anhalt on the first weekend of Advent, while the first ski lifts were already open on the Lower Saxony side of the Harz Mountains.
In contrast, things are looking better for the cross-country ski trails in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. The first cross-country ski trails around Schierke, Benneckenstein and Sorge have been prepared and are in operation.
