Weather - Smooth roads despite risk of icy conditions and snowfall in the north

The wintry weather also led to accidents in the north on Wednesday - but at the same time the situation appears to be somewhat more relaxed. "We got through much better," a spokesperson for the Hamburg city cleaning service told the German Press Agency in the afternoon. At the moment, there are no reports of danger from the weather services, so they are hoping that the situation will ease. However, the city cleaning service remains on call.

On the A7 near Handewitt (Schleswig-Flensburg district), a truck skidded into a ditch on a snow-covered road on Wednesday night. The highway was closed in the northbound direction for several hours and could only be reopened on Wednesday morning at around 9:00 a.m., according to the police. No one was injured in the accident.

The Hamburg traffic control center had not registered a higher number of car accidents by midday. There were also no special weather-related operations for the fire department. "The people of Hamburg can handle the snow quite well," said a spokesperson.

According to the airport, flight operations in Hamburg ran smoothly on Wednesday afternoon. "Our winter services team at Hamburg Airport has been working again since the early hours of this morning to keep runways and aprons clear of ice and snow," a spokeswoman said. "However, air traffic is very closely networked, so it can never be completely ruled out that weather-related restrictions at other airports may also cause minor delays."

Several police spokespeople in the north said that many drivers had adapted very well to the difficult road conditions. Nevertheless, there were some accidents and fender benders, most of which were minor. In the districts of Stormarn and Herzogtum Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein, the police registered 38 incidents caused by slippery roads from Tuesday to Wednesday morning, in which two people were slightly injured.

In particular, uncleared roads in the north have also led to longer delivery times for Deutsche Post and DHL over the past few days, a spokesperson said in Hamburg on Wednesday. Delays are to be expected for letters and parcels.

According to the DWD, there will be rain, sleet and snow in the coming days. There is still a local risk of slipperiness on the frozen ground. Temperatures will climb to highs of around five degrees in some places during the day.
