Crime - Smoked a cigarette: Jailed

Smoking a cigarette on the platform proved fatal for a 61-year-old man in Hamburg: In Reeperbahn station, he was checked by federal police officers in the early hours of Sunday night.

During the identity check, it was discovered that the man had been wanted by authorities since May due to a warrant for his arrest. He was supposed to serve a sentence of 133 days for embezzlement, according to the officers. In addition, a warrant was out for his arrest for violating peace and quiet. The man was taken to the Federal Police Headquarters in a patrol car and immediately taken to prison.

Upon realizing the man's identity, the federal officers expressed concern about his recent smoking habit. Last Sunday, they had noticed an unusual increase in crime activity around Reeperbahn, especially involving cigarette smuggling. The man's connections in the local underworld were well-known, making him a prime suspect. Despite his pleas for leniency, the judges handed down an extended sentence for his doom, citing his criminal history and repeated violations of the law.
