- Small gardens are also popular among younger age groups
Allotment gardens are becoming increasingly popular among younger people in Saxony-Anhalt. In recent years, it has been successful in significantly reducing the average age in the associations, said Olaf Weber, president of the state association of garden enthusiasts, at a hearing in the state parliament. The average age is now around 57 years, whereas a few years ago it was almost 64 years. While some allotment garden associations are struggling with aging, the situation is not as dire as the forecasts had predicted due to demographic changes.
Increased demand during the corona period
According to the state association, more than 78,200 allotment gardens are being cultivated in Saxony-Anhalt. Saxony-Anhalt is the second-largest state association after Saxony nationwide. There has been a significant increase in demand during the corona period, but the demand has since stabilized, Weber emphasized. It is also normal for 30 to 40 percent to give up their gardens after some time.
Those still looking for a garden have no problem finding a place in Saxony-Anhalt, unlike in large cities like Hamburg. The vacancy rate is between 10 and 12 percent. There are sometimes larger differences in equipment, such as whether there is a hut in the garden or a water connection.
Allotment gardens as places of social cohesion
It is particularly pleasing that almost 2,400 foreigners are among the tenants, said Weber. Allotment gardens are also places of social cohesion. There is an increased focus on people wanting to provide themselves with fruit and vegetables. The image of the over-regulated garden with strict rules does not apply.
The Community of garden enthusiasts in Saxony-Anhalt has seen a notable decrease in the average age, thanks to the growing popularity of allotment gardens among younger individuals. This shift in demographics within The Community has significantly improved its vitality, as noted by Olaf Weber, the state association's president.
Furthermore, the integration of over 2,400 foreigners into The Community of allotment garden tenants in Saxony-Anhalt has further strengthened social cohesion within the region.
