Snow and icy roads have also paralyzed traffic in Baden-Württemberg in some places. From Tuesday onwards, most drivers can breathe a sigh of relief - but only for the time being.

German Weather Service - Slippery snow slows down traffic: next slippery road ahead

Winter weather again tested the patience of many people in Baden-Württemberg from Monday to Tuesday. Rail travelers in the south of the state in particular had to cope with restrictions. Train services were suspended between Lindau in Bavaria and Friedrichshafen, the line from Titisee to Seebrugg in the Black Forest was closed, and at times there were also no trains running between Immendingen (Tuttlingen district) and Singen (Hohentwiel).

There were many accidents on the roads. On the Autobahn 7 near Heidenheim, a hazardous goods truck skidded in slippery snow and overturned during the night. The freeway in the direction of Ulm was completely closed for hours, with a traffic jam up to eleven kilometers long, according to the police. The driver was probably slightly injured and around 80,000 euros worth of damage was caused.

For large parts of the country, there are now signs of easing on the roads. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), it is only expected to snow from around 700 meters until Wednesday evening. According to the information, slippery snow is only to be expected in the mountains at times. Up to 30 centimetres of fresh snow may fall in congested areas of the Black Forest. As it will also be windy to stormy in the Black Forest, snow drifts are also to be expected there.

The rest of Baden-Württemberg will now receive rain. A band of precipitation will cross the state to the east until Wednesday. Caution is advised again in the night to Thursday: Then it will clear up and get cold. According to a DWD spokesperson, widespread freezing rain is to be expected and it could become slippery throughout the country. Thursday is set to be sunny. In the mountains, temperatures are expected to be around freezing point, otherwise between 2 and 4 degrees.

Winter sports enthusiasts in the southwest will be able to pursue their hobby at least up to and including Friday. Until then, the snow cover on the Swabian Alb and in the Black Forest should keep ski lifts and cross-country ski trails open. On Saturday, however, the DWD predicts a thaw with temperatures of 5 degrees at high altitudes and up to 15 degrees on the Rhine. "A lot will melt away", says the spokesperson.
