Labor market - Slight increase in unemployment in the North at the end of 2023

At the end of 2023, slightly more people in Schleswig-Holstein were without a permanent job again. In December, 89,000 people were registered as unemployed, as reported by the Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency on Wednesday. That was 1700 more people than in November and 4700 more than a year ago. The unemployment rate was 5.6 percent in December, compared to 5.5 percent in November and 5.3 percent at the end of 2022.

"The overall stable situation on the labor market did not change in December," said Markus Biercher, head of the regional directorate. The increase compared to November is typical for the season. "In addition, there are economic influences that are particularly noticeable in retail compared to the previous year and were also clearly reflected in the decline in Christmas business." In the tourist regions of North Friesland (up 5.3 percent) and Ostholstein (up 5.2 percent), unemployment increased slightly compared to the previous month.

Biercher also considers the significant increase of 8,600 jobs subject to social insurance contributions according to October data to be remarkable. New jobs were created in the health and social services sector (up 3,500), in real estate, freelance, scientific and technical services (up 2,000) and in public administration and social security (up 1,700) compared to the previous year.

In contrast, 2100 jobs were lost in the retail sector, for example. Most recently, the employment agencies had 25,600 jobs subject to social insurance contributions, around 2500 fewer than a year ago.

Employment Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) emphasized that "older and severely disabled unemployed people in particular often have at least a vocational school qualification, so there are potential skilled workers and employees waiting for their chance".

Regarding the discussion about the increase in the citizen's allowance, Madsen pointed out that the significant increase of around twelve percent was the result of a ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court and high inflation. "The new rates of the so-called standard needs continue to only cover the minimum subsistence level. In view of the resulting huge increase in expenditure on basic income support, we must once again place greater emphasis on the principle of support and demand and get people into work more quickly."

Among the districts, Stormarn had the lowest unemployment rate in December at 4.0 percent and Dithmarschen the highest at 6.0 percent. In the four independent cities, it was lowest in Kiel at 7.4 percent and highest in Neumünster at 8.4 percent.
