Labor market - Slight increase in the number of unemployed in NRW
The number of unemployed in North Rhine-Westphalia increased by approximately 4200 to 743,000 in June compared to May. The unemployment rate remained at 7.4 percent, the same level as in the previous month, according to the Federal Employment Agency in Düsseldorf on Friday. A year ago, the rate was 7.2 percent. The Federal Employment Agency used data up to June 13 for the statistics.
The increase in unemployment numbers can also be attributed to the fact that many young people registered as unemployed after completing their vocational training in June. "Highly qualified specialists, they are in demand on the labor market. Most of them will soon start their first job and leave unemployment behind," said the labor market expert of the Regional Directorate NRW, Dirk Strangfeld.
The increase in youth unemployment is seasonal but is usually compensated by the spring revival on the labor market. This has recently been weaker. "The labor market was also lacking the economic boost at mid-year," Strangfeld said. Due to the tense situation, companies and businesses are still reluctant to hire new employees.
Job searching remains particularly challenging for people without education. According to the Federal Employment Agency, 145 people apply for every 10 jobs that do not require formal qualifications. For skilled workers, there are only 25 applicants and applicants per 10 jobs.
