Slight increase in the number of school enrollments in Brandenburg
Around 25,800 pupils have started school in Brandenburg in the current school year. This is 1.5 percent more than in the previous school year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced in Wiesbaden on Monday, citing preliminary figures.
This means that around 830,600 children started school nationwide, the highest number in 20 years. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 2.1 percent. According to the authority, the increase is due to higher birth rates and increased immigration, particularly from Ukraine.
Baden-Württemberg recorded the most significant increase at 6.9 percent. Only Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (minus 0.6 percent) and Thuringia (minus 0.7 percent) recorded a decline in enrolments.
The increase in school enrollments in Brandenburg contributes to the nationwide total of 830,600 pupils starting school this year, marking the highest number in two decades. Due to higher birth rates and increased immigration, particularly from Ukraine, schools across Germany are seeing a rise in student numbers.
