Slight increase in the number of children enrolled in school in Berlin
Around 38,200 pupils have started school in Berlin in the current school year. This is 0.5 percent more than in the previous school year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced in Wiesbaden on Monday, citing preliminary figures.
Nationwide, around 830,600 children started school, the highest number for 20 years. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 2.1 percent. According to the authority, the increase is due to higher birth rates and increased immigration, particularly from Ukraine.
Baden-Württemberg recorded the most significant increase at 6.9 percent. Only Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (minus 0.6 percent) and Thuringia (minus 0.7 percent) recorded a decline in enrolments.
Schools in Berlin saw a 0.5% increase in enrollment, with 38,200 pupils beginning their education this year. Berlin's schools are part of the nationwide trend, as a total of 830,600 children started school, marking the highest number in two decades.
