Skiing hopeful Dreßen hot for speed start
Former Streif winner Thomas Dreßen is leading the German ski team in the Alpine World Cup races in Beaver Creek. After the runs on the Matterhorn planned for mid-November once again fell victim to the weather, nothing stands in the way of the speed start in the USA next weekend.
The course was "super groomed in the first training session, so really nice to ski", said Dreßen in a statement from the German Ski Association (DSV) on Wednesday. He had "taken a close look at everything and knows what I have to do before the weekend in order to be fast". Dreßen won the legendary Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel in 2018. After years of health setbacks, he wants to attack again this winter and is considered a beacon of hope among the German speed specialists.
Alongside the 30-year-old, Romed Baumann, Josef Ferstl, Simon Jocher, Andreas Sander and Luis Vogt will also be taking to the slopes in Beaver Creek. There is a downhill on Friday and Saturday and a super-G on Sunday (both at 18:45 CET).
Dominik Schwaiger suffered a knee injury in training and has already left the race. An overstretching of the anterior cruciate ligament and a bone sprain on the tibial plateau in his right knee have been diagnosed, the federation announced. The injury will be treated conservatively, i.e. without surgery. Schwaiger may be able to return to the races in Bormio, Italy, at the end of December.
Dreßen's alpine skiing skills will be put to the test once again in the World Cup races at Beaver Creek, as he leads the German team in this Winter sports event. He expressed his excitement for the upcoming departure, stating that the course was well-groomed and he had a clear idea of what needed to be done to perform well in the Alpine World Cup event. Despite the injury to Dominik Schwaiger, who will miss the Beaver Creek races due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury and a bone sprain, the German team remains hopeful for a strong showing.
