World Cup - Ski World Champion Schmid on the verge of a comeback after cruciate ligament rupture
World champion Alexander Schmid is about to return to the Alpine Ski World Cup after tearing his cruciate ligament. The Allgäu native has been nominated for the giant slalom next Saturday in Val d'Isère (09.30/13.00 hrs/ARD and Eurosport). Schmid (29) won gold in the parallel race at the World Championships last winter, but tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee during training a few weeks later and had to undergo surgery. He did not compete in the first World Cups of the current season - although only one slalom has been held so far anyway due to various weather problems.
"I'm doing well. I can now ski without pain. I'm still taking a break from training here and there to manage the strain as best as possible, but that's normal," said Schmid according to a statement from the German Ski Association(DSV) on Wednesday.
"Of course I'm really looking forward to Val d'Isère because it will simply be the first race after my injury break. I'm already tingling a bit, but I have good memories of the place," he added. He finished in the top 10 for the first time in his World Cup career in Val d'Isère at the end of 2017.
The DSV will have a total of four athletes competing in the giant slalom; Linus Straßer will lead a five-man German team in the slalom on Sunday (09:30/12:30/ARD and Eurosport). In the women's event in St. Moritz (Switzerland) from Friday to Sunday, two super-G and one downhill are scheduled, for which Kira Weidle as podium hopeful as well as Emma Aicher and Kathrin Hirtl-Stanggaßinger have been nominated.
