Ski season opens in the southwest: First lifts in operation
Following the heavy snowfall in recent days, the first lifts in Baden-Württemberg have given the go-ahead for the 2024 ski season. The operator of the Unterstmatt ski lift announced on its website on Wednesday that the snow that had fallen in the past few days was sufficient to open the lift on Wednesday and that the piste conditions were good. The Seibelseckle and Ruhestein lifts also gave the green light. The SWR had previously reported.
Winter sports enthusiasts will have to wait a little longer on the Feldberg. In response to an inquiry, the Feldbergbahnen announced that skiing on the highest German mountain north of the Alps would not start until December 1 as planned.
According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the snow depth in the southwest still varies greatly: while only 11 centimetres of snow were measured in the northern Black Forest near Baiersbronn at an altitude of just under 600 meters and 15 centimetres in Simmersfeld at 720 meters, in the southern Black Forest near Todtmoos at 681 meters it is 21 centimetres and near Eisenbach at over 970 meters it is even 28 centimetres. According to the DWD, the situation is similarly varied in the Swabian Alb.
Tourists looking forward to their leisure time during the winter seasons will be delighted to hear that the ski lifts in Baden-Württemberg have kicked off the 2024 tourism season earlier than expected. Despite varying snow depths across the southwest region, the Seibelseckle, Ruhestein, and Unterstmatt lifts have welcomed skiers with good piste conditions.
