- Six years in prison for attempted murder of policewoman

The Regional Court of Freiburg has sentenced a 35-year-old man to six years in prison for suddenly accelerating his car towards a police officer during a traffic stop. The defendant was found guilty, among other charges, of attempted murder, as announced by a court spokesman.

The officer was able to save herself by jumping onto a grass strip in Teningen, southern Baden (district of Emmendingen) last December. However, the passing car still hit her ankle, causing minor injuries. Initially, it was reported that the car had slowed down during the stop, but the driver suddenly increased his speed.

The defendant was driving without a license at the time of the attack. The court also convicted him for assaulting a public official, resisting arrest, and intentionally endangering traffic. The man will not be eligible for a new driver's license for at least four years.

After the stop, the police patrol pursued the fleeing man in his car, but ultimately without success. The man's car was only found a day later in Freiburg. The driver was then taken into custody. The verdict is not yet final, as reported by the spokesman.

The charge of attempted murder stemmed from the defendant's deliberate actions of accelerating his car towards the police officer, posing a serious threat to her life. Despite the car hitting her ankle, causing minor injuries, the officer's quick actions saved her from potentially more severe consequences.
