Six schools honored for work against anti-Semitism

Six schools in Lower Saxony receive an award for their work against anti-Semitism. The Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony and the School Foundation in the Diocese of Osnabrück will award the ecumenical seal of approval "Together against anti-Semitism" to six church institutions for the first time on Wednesday, November 22, as announced by the Diocese of Osnabrück on Tuesday. The award will be presented in the Jewish community in Osnabrück and will go to the BBS Marienhausschule Meppen, the Gymnasium Marianum Meppen, the Evangelisches Gymnasium Nordhorn, the Ursulaschule Osnabrück, the Domschule Osnabrück and the Thomas-Morus-Schule Osnabrück.

In order to receive the seal of approval, the institutions must, among other things, organize further training on the topic of anti-Semitism and religious discrimination for all employees, establish rules for intervention in the event of anti-Semitic incidents and address the topic at parent events. It is also mandatory to hold a commemoration of the Shoah during the school year and to discuss the political situation in the Middle East and Israel-related anti-Semitism in class. The religion-sensitive design of the school, such as kosher food in the school canteen or the celebration of Muslim and Jewish holidays, is also part of the criteria.

The seal of approval will also be awarded in future to church schools that meet the criteria. It was developed in collaboration with the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

The six schools that received the Award against anti-Semitism are now required to organize regular training on anti-Semitism and religious discrimination for their staff. These honored schools will also commence commemoration of the Shoah during their school year, discussing the political situation in the Middle East and Israel-related anti-Semitism in their classes.
