Six people lost their lives during a political event in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
In an initial inquiry, it was discovered that fatalities happened following an altercation between armed civilians at a get-together connected to the municipal presidency race of La Concordia for the Chiapas Popular Party, participated by candidate Lucero López Maza.
Although López Maza was not explicitly stated to be among the casualties, political clashes have escalated nationwide in anticipation for Mexico's biggest election on June 2nd.
The Attorney General's office disclosed that among the victims were three females and three males, who were all shot dead. The probe continues as authorities hunt for the criminals behind the attack.
The region connected to Chiapas is witnessing a rise in aggression, as crime syndicates struggle for dominion over profitable routes for migrant and drug trafficking. Just recently, eleven people lost their lives in shootouts at the nearby municipality of Chicomuselo, as per the state attorney's remarks.
The Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel have been entangled in a power struggle in the vicinity, driving hundreds of residents to flee from their villages in January.
