Accident - Six injured due to leakage of a toxic substance
Six people were injured at a logistics center in Bottrop due to the release of a harmful substance. A forklift driver, according to a statement from a fire department spokesperson, damaged a barrel on Monday evening while unloading a truck, causing the dangerous substance to leak and spreading corrosive fumes in the hall.
Six employees of the logistics center suffered respiratory irritations and were taken to the hospital as a precaution. The forklift driver took the damaged barrel outside to prevent further spreading.
Firefighters ventilated the hall to remove the harmful fumes. The damaged barrel was packaged in a corresponding container under protective breathing conditions. Spilled liquid in the hall was dispersed and absorbed by two teams in chemical protective suits using a special chemical binding agent. The operation lasted into the late night.
The incident was reported to the local forwarding agency in North Rhine-Westphalia, as it involved a logistics center. The emergency services were kept busy handling the accidents caused by the hazardous substance release, including the initial accident involving the forklift in Bottrop. Medical attention was needed for several individuals, highlighting the importance of proper safety procedures in such environments.
