Six individuals perished in Mexico following the army's apparent gunfire at a moving vehicle.
Tragically, a significant incident occurred on a Tuesday evening, as military personnel noticed a speeding vehicle filled with 33 migrants, as per the Mexican Defense Ministry (SEDENA).
According to their statement, the vehicle attempted to bypass a military patrol in Chiapas, a Mexican state bordering Guatemala.
SEDENA mentioned that following the pickup truck were two vehicles resembling those utilized by criminal organizations in the region. They reported hearing explosions and responded with gunfire.
Four migrants lost their lives instantly at the scene, and two more in a nearby hospital, as SEDENA reported. The incident resulted in twelve individuals getting injured.
Sheinbaum declared on Thursday that the deceased migrants hailed from Egypt, El Salvador, and Peru, advocating for a comprehensive investigation and consequences for the incident.
Both soldiers have been relieved of their duties and handed over to the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the circumstances surrounding the events, according to the president.
Violence in Chiapas has been on a dramatic increase as cartels struggle for dominance over profitable paths for smuggling migrants and narcotics. The Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel have been engaged in a territorial dispute in the area, forcing many to abandon their homes last January.
This tragic incident in the Americas has drawn international attention, as it highlights the increasing danger and chaos in migrant routes worldwide. The violence in Chiapas, specifically, has been escalating, forcing numerous individuals to flee their homes.
