Single parents receive almost half: Educational assistance
Single parents in Berlin and Brandenburg received almost half of the educational support for children and young people. At just under 48% in Berlin and around 45% in Brandenburg, they therefore receive significantly more help than cohabiting parents, according to the Office for Statistics. In total, more than 83,700 young people in the capital and 45,300 in Brandenburg received help in 2022.
The stress experienced by young people due to conflicts within the family, developmental problems and mental health issues are the main reasons for receiving educational support. Limited parenting skills on the part of parents or other guardians are also a reason for seeking help.
Of the various types of help on offer, parenting advice is used most frequently (around 37% in both federal states). In second place is parenting in homes and other forms of supervised living, at around 15% in Berlin and Brandenburg.
In many cases, the need for educational assistance stems from challenges faced by young people within their families, such as family conflicts or mental health issues. Despite these challenges, single parents in Berlin and Brandenburg benefit significantly from educational support, receiving nearly half of all assistance provided in 2022.
