Crime statistics - Significant rise in the number of counterfeit money cases in NRW

The number of counterfeit money cases in North Rhine-Westphalia continued to rise last year. At the request of the German Press Agency, the State Criminal Police Office reported 2019 cases in which counterfeit money was put into circulation. In the previous year, there had been 1478 cases, an increase of 36.6 percent.

According to the Bundesbank, the most counterfeited bill is the fifty-euro bill, accounting for almost 40 percent of all counterfeits. However, coins are also counterfeited - last year, according to the Bundesbank, significantly more frequently than banknotes.

The number of counterfeit money cases in NRW has risen continuously since 2020. The overall increase in the use of cashless payment systems has not changed this, according to investigators. The State Office of Criminal Investigation has not yet been able to provide any figures for the current year. The investigators also do not currently see any improvements in counterfeiting, for example through better technology.

The German Press Agency sought data on counterfeit money cases from the LKA (State Criminal Police Office) in Düsseldorf, specifically in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Deutsche Bundesbank revealed that the fifty-euro bill is the most frequently counterfeited bill, making up almost 40% of all counterfeits. Despite the increasing use of cashless payment systems, the number of counterfeit money cases in North Rhine-Westphalia has persistently increased since 2020, with no signs of decreasing criminality in this area.
